Why You Should Dream Big Every day and every night I dream big....

Why You Should Dream Big

Every day and every night I dream big. I wake up and I spend 10 minutes thinking about the day and where each step could take me, what each person could say and the impact that could have on my life. I’m a big thinker, so it comes naturally… Perhaps an over-thinker but who sets the rules on how much we should or shouldn’t be thinking anyway? The bigger my dream, the more excitement I have and the more prepared I am to take on the day. So here’s why I think we should all be dreaming bigger and really go for our goals, whatever they may be.

1. What’s the harm?
Seriously? I don’t understand why people are so afraid to dream. I hear people thinking out loud and they start to dream and get excited. Then follows the depressing sigh and ‘Oh well. It’s only a dream and it will never happen’. And that’s it. Just as the conversation was starting to get going and we were moving away from the everyday; talking about the weather, work, what rubbish is on TV, what chores you have to do when you get home…. They stop. Shame because you were really starting to interest and intrigue me but continue on about Britain’s Got X Factor Baking because I really want to hear about that. It feels to me like some people are afraid to dream. There could be multiple reasons behind that but is there really any harm in spending 10 minutes exploring your dreams, thinking about what it could be like, if it is really possible. You don’t have to take any action, no risks are involved but it could just leave you feeling a little a bit more positive and who knows, if you run with an idea, you might just find a way of making it work.

2. It could lead to a positive change
Do you ever evaluate your life? Do you ever sit back and think, what am I doing and why? Do I really enjoy this or am I doing it for the money? What would I rather be doing now and why aren’t I doing it? Why am I really not achieving my goals?
If not, take a moment. If your answers don’t make you want to explode with passion about the world and what you’re doing then consider why not and what would. Think about your personality, your current situation and your list of excuses. The beauty of the world is we’re all different so everyone will have either major or marginally different answers to the above. Consider for a moment your dreams and your goals and how you could get there. Then try to put some of those positive steps into action, who knows where you may end up.

3. You could start to take risks
The majority of people will always be apprehensive when taking risks. It’s natural, it’s a survival instinct that has been thousands of years in the making. Only the risks have changed. No longer is it a weigh up between going out to get dinner because your family are hungry and not wanting to leave your cave because there could be a predator waiting to kill you. It’s different today. The biggest risk factor people talk about is money. We’re totally obsessed with it. But if you never take any risks, I can imagine life would be no fun. An extreme example but I was talking with my family the other day about Mount Everest. If I ever got a chance to climb it I would. There isn’t a single doubt in my mind. My grandad said he couldn’t believe I would because I could die. The truth for me is that I would rather die at the age of 26 attempting to complete something extraordinary than at the age of 96 having never experienced anything. Risks have to be weighed up, they have to be examined so they aren’t totally on a hiding to nothing but sometimes you just have to go for it. If things go wrong, that’s unfortunate but if you never try I think that’s even more so…..

4. People who don’t give up on their dreams are successful
I really believe this is true. It may be they are successful in a different place than they initially wanted to be but their drive will lead them to be successful in something. A few examples of famous people who never gave up on their dream:
- Katy Perry was dropped from three record labels, now she is a world famous pop star. She was initially a gospel singer.
- Oprah Winfrey was fired from her local news station as she was told she was “unfit for television”. She now has a hugely successful talk show.
- J K Rowling had her infamous book Harry Potter turned away by 12 major publishers. She never gave up and has now sold over 400 million copies of her books.
- Walt Disney was fired from his job as an editor because he “lacked imagination”. His legacy in children’s films will live forever.
(More incredible examples here 12 Famous People Who Failed Before Succeeding)
These individuals had to adapt, they had to be resourceful and above all they never gave up on their dreams. They weren’t successful from day one but their dedication to their dreams meant they will all go down in history in each of their chosen careers.

5. Dreaming bigger can lead to bigger results
This has been scientifically proven. In a Dutch study titled “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough? Setting High Weight Loss Goals Predict Effort and Short Term Weight Loss” they proved that people who had dreams of losing more weight lost more in the short term than those with smaller goals, (from Why You Must Dream Big). Ok, so the negatives out there will be saying it’s only short term and I know weight loss and fitness goals are long term but the study makes an important point. If you dream big and put steps in place to try to get there then the actions you take will be greater. So put back those pictures of Shaun T and start dreaming bigger to achieve your weight loss goals! And apply the same principles to other areas in your life. Combine this with a truckload of motivation and you’ll be laughing all the way to dreamland.

6. You might just achieve everything you ever wanted
If you start to dream and you allow yourself to dream of everything you wanted and how you could get there, you might actually achieve it. Who’s to tell you it will or won’t happen? Look at the individuals above, if they had listened to the negativity, if they had given up on their dreams their lives would have been very different. Mine would be too. When I mentioned my business to people there were plenty of naysayers, people who told me it wouldn’t work, that I should try to continue where I was. But I was miserable. I couldn’t live a life like that, I couldn’t wake up every day dreading work. I had a dream and I followed it. Now I’m fitter than I’ve ever been and I love every single session I go to. It may be a small success when you compare to the likes of Walt Disney but I’m hugely happy and that’s all that matters to me. It should be all that matters to you too, success is measured in many ways.
